Childhood memories revisited in 4K High Definition
I preordered this book through Amazon, as soon as it became available (it is not available through LEGO.com in Australia). As a child of the 70s-80s, the early years of minifigures were important to me, and the Space sets were amongst my favourite when they were released. This book captures the spirit and the wonder, with access to the original archive photos - previously only seen in poorly scanned catalogues - as well as the wonderful smell of real paper. The author is also editor-in-chief of NewElementary.com - and his penchant for LEGO parts shows as he introduces us to the elements that made our favourite childhood theme, along with the sets they appeared in. Interviews with designers who were part of the process at the time just add to this tome of nostalgia. I have spent more time poring over this book than I typically spend building and rebuilding sets of a similar price. My only criticism would be that - for good reasons - it does not cover all sets that fit under the space umbrella through Life on Mars, before the shift to 'conflict in a box' I left this book on the living room table during the Christmas holidays and picked it up to read, time and again, as did visitors of a certain age!
