A LEGO deal for a 6-year-old is not the same thing as a markdown on a display set. You are looking for a box that matches what the child already plays, that builds in about an hour and that has enough minifigures or vehicles to keep the story going past day one. Price matters, but gift value matters at least as much.
That makes the choice concrete. If you want the best deal outright, Jet vs. Car (€ 23,99) is the sharpest City offer of the moment. If the child loves playing shop or with characters, the Heartlake City Sweet Shop (€ 22,55) is the strongest Friends buy on price per piece. And if you need several small gifts at once, a Battle Pack or a superhero mech gives you the most minifigures per euro.
So this is not a flat list ranked on discount percentage, but a gift decision: which deals offer the most play time per euro right now, and which theme suits which kind of 6-year-old. How we rank
This ranking does not stand or fall on the discount percentage. A set with sixty percent off but no clear play function drops here; a set with “only” thirty percent off finishes high when the price per piece is strong, the minifigures are plentiful and the theme is broadly appealing. Gifting for a 6-year-old is not price optimisation but a choice that fits a specific child.
Seven signals set the order, and they are tuned to whoever unwraps the gift:
- current lowest price versus RRP;
- price per piece within the age class;
- availability at Dutch retailers;
- number of minifigures and play functions;
- alignment with themes 6-year-olds already know;
- build time, ideally under sixty minutes;
- gift value: presentation, box size and how long the play lasts.

Why age 6 is its own LEGO milestone
From age six a child builds a set independently for the first time, but does not yet read the manual fluently. It leans on the pictures, the arrows and the colours in the booklet, not on text. Numbered bags do most of the work: they tell the child which parts come next, so it keeps its own pace. That is the difference between a set finished in one evening and one that ends up half-built in a box.
Fine motor skills are still developing at this age, and that is where the friction sits — not in the complexity of the steps. Lots of tiny parts and sheets of stickers are the stumbling block. So for a 6-year-old just starting out alone, pick sets with fewer stickers and clear colour blocks; if the child already has building experience, a 7+ set is worth considering. A 6+ Friends set, a 6+ Star Wars Battle Pack and a 6+ NINJAGO dragon ask for roughly the same: the theme changes, the complexity barely does.
One practical note. Many 6-year-olds rebuild the same set over and over in the first month, and for many the box is part of the gift feeling. So keep the booklet and the box — the model is less “finished” than for an older builder, and that rebuilding is exactly the play.
Friends or City: where to start
LEGO Friends and LEGO City are the two largest 6+ themes and look far apart at first glance. In play patterns they overlap more than you would think: both centre on recognisable locations, vehicles and figures, only the colour palette and characters differ. So the choice follows the play that is already there.
Choose LEGO Friends when the child enjoys shops, animals, school or named characters. Sets like 42677 Dog Treats Bakery and 42666 Cat Birthday Party & Tree House extend the Heartlake City universe many children already know. Choose LEGO City when vehicles, jobs or action take centre stage: 60415 Police Car and Muscle Car Chase, 60447 Off-Road 4x4 Mountain Truck and 60430 Interstellar Spaceship are typical entry sets next to a larger police station.
Friends shortlist: how to choose between the three
The three most heavily discounted Friends sets differ less in price than in what the child does with them. The Beach Smoothie Stand is the small, quick buy with the highest percentage discount — strong as a classroom favour. The Sweet Shop is the best price per piece: € 22,55 for 376 pieces works out to € 0,06 per part, and the figures fit other Heartlake City sets. And the Pet Accessories Shop is the richest in story, with three animals and a complete pet shop — often the lasting favourite for the child who plays pretend for hours. So don’t choose on discount alone, but on what happens after the build.
Star Wars, Marvel and NINJAGO: the licence picks
With a licence, recognition almost always beats price per piece. A child who watches Star Wars at home wants a Star Wars set, even if the Friends price per piece is better. The rule of thumb is simple: follow the series the child already sees, and let the sum go.
For Star Wars, the 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack is the logical entry, with 75400 Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter Microfighter as a smaller alternative. For Marvel fans, 76307 Iron Man Mech vs. Ultron and 76308 Spider-Man Mech vs. Anti-Venom make an almost identically priced duo gift. And for NINJAGO fans, 71829 Lloyd’s Green Forest Dragon is the low-cost starter, with larger mech sets that regularly turn up in the LEGO deals.
Stacking small gifts
When you need several small gifts at once — classroom treats, a group of nieces and nephews, or separate Sinterklaas presents — a stack of cheap sets is usually better value than one big box. You share the shipping and keep more choice per child. The trick is to stay within one theme per child: a Marvel mech plus a Battle Pack gives two worlds for under twenty euros, and for Friends fans the Beach Smoothie Stand together with 42646 Autumn’s Room makes a tidy combined Heartlake bundle. That way each present feels complete, even when it is small.
When is the best time to buy a LEGO 6+ deal?
There are three windows when the sharpest 6+ deals appear. Late January to mid-February, when shops clear holiday stock and prior-year sets drop thirty to forty percent. September and October, the back-to-school cycle when stock rotates and older sets are discounted aggressively. Avoid December itself for birthday gifts outside the holiday window; prices are higher then than in January. And avoid the week before Sinterklaas for sets you definitely want, because shops temporarily lift prices or keep stock deliberately tight. A price alert on the specific set takes that off your hands: you get a message the moment your target price hits. Finally, watch the gap between RRP and the “was” price some shops show — that “was” figure sometimes sits above the official RRP, making the discount look larger than it is.
Common mistakes when buying LEGO for age 6
The first mistake is buying a set that is too advanced “because they are six now”. A 9+ set can frustrate a 6-year-old, even one who seems older. The age rating is a good guide; go one year above at most.
The second mistake is picking purely on discount percentage. A DOTS sticker extension at fifty percent off adds less gift value than a larger Friends set at thirty percent off with multiple figures. Look at absolute price, box size and minifigure count together.
The third mistake is forcing variety. If the child only plays Friends, a discounted Star Wars Battle Pack is not a convincing gift, no matter how good the discount. Follow the existing play pattern and broaden only once the child gets curious about something else on their own.
