Train with sound
Long playtime for father and son (ages 1.5) and grandmother, who enjoys watching her grandson's happy face as he plays with his steam train. A great recommendation.
Fun train set with good compatibility
My 2 year old son loves this set, but had to buy the extra train track set to make it worthwhile combination wise. Took a gamble that this track would be compatible with other duplo trains, it is (see picture of Toy Story 3 Train), which made it even more fun, because you can have the moving motor part on the carridge, not just the main train. Great set!
Duplo train set
Gift given for my grandson to play with. He enjoys building the tracks himself.
I was expecting better quality
This is a great idea for toddlers to learn and interact with, but Lego made some not-so-great choices on the design of the train which would make me not recommend this to another parent.
The track system itself is good and simple. For a kid who plays with Duplo, it a good addition to the system.
My issues mainly fall with the train itself. 1) the motor isn’t strong enough for what it’s designed to do. We purchased the bridge accessory for it, and even with brand new batteries, it struggles a bit to make it up the ramp. (I’ll say lithium batteries are really the only choice for toys with motors like this, but if you don’t go rechargeable, it can get expensive as the batteries drain quickly given what they’re doing).
2) Lego decided to use thread-cutting screws to secure the battery plate in place. This is a cheap solution for this, rather than using machine threaded screws with a built in insert. The thread-cutting screws just cut threads into the plastic hole. So after replacing batteries a couple of times, you will end up stripping the hole after so many times. This will eventually cause the cover to not hold in place. Could easily be fixed but having the plate be a combo snap-lock with screws, or just using screws with an insert.
3) the automation of the train is great, and it runs by itself utilizing the markers, but I wish there was a way to use the train without having to turn it on. Like a manual override. Kids are so much more interactive when they have to physically move the train. The motor-play and the markers is fun, but it would be nice if you could play with it both ways.
Perfect for 3 year old builder
My 3 year old is a huge Duplo fan! She loves to build. This train set is superb. YES, you will need to change the batteries a ridiculous amount, (especially if you have the bridge pieces.) We love the interactive app option that allows my daughter to change the color of the train lights and blow the whistle whenever she pleases. She loves reversing the train. She also loves the characters and the squirrel included with the set. It was a perfect hit for Christmas!
Great set , but buy extra tracks
My boys aged 3 and 6 both really enjoy this set. I got the additional tracks and bridge. It’s easy enough for my 3 year old to help build tracks and operate the train; and my oldest likes making more complex designs. When their friends are here there’s enough for 4 kids. Both girls and boys enjoy this set. This also goes with other Duplo bricks and some vehicles fit on the tracks too, it can even be raised up off the floor. If the kids have imagination there’s lots to do with it. I haven’t had issues with it, and it goes up and down the bridge easily until batteries run low.
*I would have liked a second option to get another/different train, the cargo train has been out of stock for awhile.
And also an option to buy spare and different coding/function tabs would be cool.
I would recomended this product.
Battery issues
My two year-old son received the train for Christmas and was super excited to set it up and try it out. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the train to work due to issues getting the batteries lined up with the contacts and had to return the train to the store. Our second set has also been a dud: one of the batteries got very hot and started melting upon putting it together. Needless to say, we have not played with it yet, and I will returning this set for a second time. As an avid LEGO parent, I am very disappointed in the quality of this toy.
Very fun, only requires batteries.
Super fun train! My 4-year-old son is very enthusiastic about it. My 1.5-year-old daughter also likes to watch it. Nice material. I bought the 2 extension sets, which allow you to build a solid track. It's fun to operate with the app or to push it yourself, and the bricks for sound, light, stopping,... add extra value for children to play with and vary. The only major drawback: we have had it for 3 weeks and have had to replace the batteries 4 times (4 AAA batteries each time). That is really annoying.
Duplo is great
The children already have another Duplo train set, and with this one added, everything fits perfectly... 1 very large train track with a station. They are really having fun!
Great toy!
Very nice toy! I really give this toy a 10 out of 10. It is beautiful, fun, sturdy, educational, modern, etc. Both the children and dad love it. The set is complete and the train can have a fun ride. It is even more fun to buy an expansion set, which gives you even more tracks, switches and a bridge. I find the interactive "bricks" that you can place on the tracks brilliant, and you could even install the app to control the train.
Great App Integration
Santa gave my 18mo this for Christmas. It is simple to set up and use.
We bought it so that our older son could play together with youngest. Works perfectly for that.
Making the set is easy, i’d recommend getting extra sets so there’s more track.
App Set up is easy and straightforward and worked straight away on our Apple devices (IoS 12)
Youngest loves the push and go so no app needed. Our 4yo loves the app and the extra interactive games.
We had a lot of old style black track from years ago, it works perfectly with that. Ths only issue is the old style bridge doesn’t have enough grip. This was fixed with a thin wipe of PVA of the track surface! We now have a hump back bridge!
Love the new trains, both Duplo and Powered Up!
This train is cute as a button, and the action bricks are a brilliant feature. I'm looking forward to using this as part of an upcoming LEGO library Display & Play Event. The modest price makes it a great way to get started with Duplo trains, or even use it as an expansion pack with other train sets.
My only reservation is the design of the battery compartment. It took several tries to get the batteries all seated properly and the lid closed without one of the batteries popping loose again. Once everything was in place, though, I had *no* problem with the amount of power available in the engine, and it is a pleasure to operate!
Recommended, also for 2-year-olds!
Nice set, easy for a 2-year-old to use. You need to push the train instead of pressing a button. A bonus is controlling it via a tablet or phone! Overall, I recommend it, but be sure to order a few rechargeable batteries (AAA) at the same time.
