Twenty euros. That is the LEGO.com difference between the new Batman Returns Batmobile 76355 and Technic Batmobile Tumbler 42239. Looking at price alone, you might expect two versions of roughly the same product. They are not.
Set 76355 is a long, film-led build for a shelf. Set 42239 is a more compact Technic car with motors, battery, lights and app control. The useful question is not which has the most pieces, but what you want to do with the car after the build.

76355 is a building and display choice
The Batman Returns Batmobile 76355 contains 2,269 pieces. You see that in the closed bodywork, its 45-centimetre length and the detail around the cockpit. It comes with one Batman minifigure and a display stand.
The play feature is restrained but suits the film car. The roof above the cockpit opens, and a button moves the sides aside to reveal the Batmissile. LEGO calls it the company’s first Batmobile with this function. It is still a model to place carefully on a shelf; there are no motors or app features.
You are paying for build time, shape and recognition. With more than three times as many pieces as the Tumbler, the build should also be slower and more layered. That makes the extra 20 euros easy to justify when display is the goal.
42239 is a toy with real electronics
The Technic Batmobile Tumbler 42239 has 719 pieces and measures 31 centimetres long. Its lower piece count says little about value because the box also contains motors and a rechargeable battery.
CONTROL+ handles steering, driving and lights. The boost function adds speed and lights up. LEGO does not include a USB-C cable, so you need to supply one. The phone is not a screen within the play story, but it is the remote control.
This is the set you want to drive across a smooth floor. On a high shelf, it loses much of its purpose. Conversely, a moving Technic car does not need the same closed bodywork or film accuracy as a display model.
Why price per piece does not solve this
Set 76355 costs about 9.3 cents per piece; 42239 about 26.4 cents. That looks like an easy win for 76355, but it ignores the battery, motors and CONTROL+ components. Electronics are not counted as bricks.
Use price per piece only when sets are trying to do roughly the same job. Function is the better measure here: do you want to spend hours building and then look, or build more quickly and then drive?
Which one would I choose?
For an adult Batman collection, I would choose 76355. The premium is small, while the display model is longer, more detailed and clearly tied to Batman Returns. It keeps working as an object even when nobody touches it.
For a family or builder who wants to play as soon as the last part clicks into place, 42239 makes more sense. The electronics are not a bonus; they are the whole point. If you mainly want a recognisable Batmobile and do not want to spend 190 euros, the 99.99-euro Batman Forever Batmobile 76304 is another option.
The two new models share a name and almost the same price tag. That is where most of the similarity ends.
