This chess set is probably the most traditional one from Lego. There are no exposed stud on chess pieces except on top of rooks and the eye of knights. The board is very sturdy but could use a compartment to put away the pieces when not playing. An excellent opportunity to mod with leftover pieces from other projects.
The build was about what I'd expect; simple yet satisfying. The real kicker was being able to play actual chess once completed.

First build of the New Year, Traditional Chess Set. Out of all the Chess sets Lego has ever produced this one is by far the best one for teaching a child how to play on due to easy piece access and recognition. However, that is also its downfall, the set costs $75 and for $30 you can get a similar chess set that is magnetic with storage for the pieces which is even better for learning and transport. This set looks so much better than 40174, which had storage and was great for travel, but falls short as a Lego set with minifigures and themed displays like the most recent HP Chess set. This is an easy pass or an easy buy depending on what you are looking for. Build: 5 Play: 8 Display: 7 Value: 4

Really Nice Simple Chess set but real sturdy and playable chess set and the base is solid and we fixed it on a large baseplate with some lego bricks and this will get a lot of use and also the pieces are solid and sturdy.
We enjoyed build this set and playing with it. Although the QR code is missing, I know the set needs to be made within a certain year and if I'm not mistaken this set was made this year. After learning how to register the set it doesn't have a QR code to register our set. I don't know how to go about it in order to get this set registered.
It is a well designed set that is fun to put together! And as a bonus, you can get away with calling it real decoration.
I thought this would fit a double duty build. A fun build and a game for the grandkids to play when they visit! My seven year old grandson saw the box and wanted to build himself. He did with no trouble at all! I would recommend this chess set as fun to build and fun to play!
I always love a set that is. Bigger than average of 300-400 pieces. After I built it it is fully functional for real games making it my favorite chess set. I have ONE complaint it costs 75 dollars which is a LOT OF MONEY FOR WHAT IT IS.
I love chess so its pretty cool to have a 2 in 1 lego and checkers set!
Bought this set for my son who absolutely loved it. The instructions were easy to follow and the finished item is both playable and showable all in all a fantastic set.
